Decks
Another common combustable space on the exterior of a home is the deck. Older construction homes (and even new) often have untreated wood decking and framing. Modern building science has brought us WUI (wildland urban interface) rated materials such as composite deck boards, and steel framing. Hardscape - Green Space - Irrigation
Moving out from the house, the next tier of protection is using lots of hardscape and green, irrigated spaces. Its common sense that irrigated green grass is much safer than dry, combustable materials. Stone features and gravel beds also go far in creating a defensible space around your home.
Mastication - Thinning
The final piece of the puzzle is to address excessive undergrowth in surrounding wooded areas around a home. When ground level brush goes unmanaged, it becomes ladder fuels for hard to stop canopy fires in the even of a wild fire.
